Enlargement of the prostate gland

The prostate gland is an organ at the base of the male bladder. It causes problems as it continues to grow/enlarge throughout life, to a greater or lesser extent in all men and can cause a blockage to the outlet of the bladder. Prostatomegaly means enlargement of the prostate gland, and usually refers to a benign problem.

A man's risk of developing prostate cancer is related to his age, genetics, race, diet, lifestyle, medications, and other factors. The primary risk factor is age. Prostate cancer is uncommon in men less than 45, but becomes more common with advancing age.

Prostate related problems may also cause problems with sexual function and performance, such as difficulty achieving erection or painful ejaculation, making men feel small and sad and worry and lots of psychological problems. Some complainof frequent urination, difficult urination, secreting other fluids such as pus or blood, high fever, chills, arthralgia or myalgia (muscular pain). Some complain of pain on perineum area, penis end or testicles.

Most enlargements come from inflammations. Where do inflammations come from? The answer is heat. Where does this heat come from? According to modern medical science, it is unknown.

What is the view from Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)?

It is imbalance between yin (cold) and yang (warm). In another words, some body parts are warmer than other body parts. Some body parts are colder than other parts. Some people have warmer upper body and cold lower body. Prostate is warmer than other parts in this case. These imbalances are due to organs’ imbalances. The temperature of the prostate can be lowed with TCM by sedating the excessive energy flowing into the prostate glands. Then inflammations would shrink and urine flow will be normal. This could be achieved by sedating the excessive organ and tonifying weak organ.
