Aspartame (artificial sweetner): Is it really that bad?

Anyone experience side effects from artificial sweeteners? I'm diabetic and rely on the sugar-free types of treats.

This is what I heard at a seminar. MD said when we eat sweetener, brain nerve requests pancreas to be ready to release insulin. Pancreas finds out this is not sugar later and stop releasing insulin. When this process continues, pancreas doesn't respond at all as it believes another fake sweetener. Now when real sugar enters, pancreas is not ready now and finds out the real sugar. Pancreas releases five times (?) more insulin than normal. That is the way body works. Please do not try any artificial sweetener. It will be eventually more harmful than beneficial in the long run.
